Avocado and Citrus Salad with Grilled Salmon

Take Out Last Night

After the Kings Grant Farmer's Market Shelby and I headed Norfolk for the 7 Hours of IPA event at The Birch. I'm a hophead so she knew I'd love to try out some good IPAs, thanks Mrs. Shelby.

On the way we were trying to figure out what to eat. First options she brought up were The Ten Top, Chelsea Bakehouse (Bacon & Gouda pizza), and Hoyt's Luncheonette. Hoyt's was off the list immediately when we saw they were closing about 15 minutes after we left the house, Bakehouse if always good and it our usual Birch pairing, but I think the siren call of one of the best sandwich shops in Norfolk captured Shelby. She went with Ten Top and I really wanted shawarma from Mr. Shawarma.

We called in our orders and made our way to the shops for take out. She got the Cobb Salad with Chicken and I got a spicy Beef Shawarma. I usually save half my wrap for lunch the next day but it was so good I ate the whole thing - and they aren't small either! Can't wait for another one...

Lamb Burger Salad (and more!)

I have fallen in love with The Stockpot's Lamb Burger Salad. Oh, here's what I'm talking about.

The Stockpot was formerly a pop-up in the area that moved into brick-and-mortar within the past year. I used to grab a soup from them at the Old Beach Farmer's Market on the weekends - just across the street from where they are now. Knowing how good their soups are, I knew their shop menu would have to be super too. I try to explore items other than soup when I visit now.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

I first tried the Lamb Burger Salad when I was flying solo for lunch. Shelby had a lunchtime commitment that day. A straight shot down I-264 to the Oceanfront, I was there in no time. They have pastries, toasts (open-faced sandwiches), wraps, salads and much more! The Lamb Burger caught my eye right off the bat. I ordered it and while I was waiting, owner Ann Galante, kindly gave me a bowl of their soup du jour - Chicken Tortilla. It was delicious, love the broths they make in house.

I finished my soup right as my salad arrived and I was excited. I love food, I get excited over it (see name of blog.) The burger smelled wonderful and the dish itself was beautiful. Nice colors, bright roasted tomatoes, cabbage, cucumber, and mixed greens lightly tossed with a dressing I'm still trying to figure out. As you can see in the photo up top, the burger sits upon this lofty throne of goodness waiting to be bathed in a nice, light wasabi dressing.

I intended on eating half of it and taking the other half home to Shelby, but I ended up eating the whole thing. I reasoned that the greens would wilt and I would buy her a fresh one soon - I did a week later ;) Take a look at the burger:

Salads from Heads Up Hydroponic

Virginia Beach's Verticle Acres uses a hydroponic growing system that produces vegetables, fruits, and herbs petrochemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. Under the label Heads Up Hydrogreens, they provide local CSAs and markets with what they grow in their new facility. I've had their lettuce before and it tastes great, I like getting by their table to see what's new. At the last Old Beach Farmer's Market we stopped by the booth to say "Hi" and ended bringing home a few of their salads. This was new—at least to me—and I was excited to try them out.

The salads were package to stay fresh and included nice, sweet beets and cheery tomatoes. We were given three dressings to use, one being a Green Goddess that I liked. We ate two the night we brought them home and later that week I used one to make myself a nice BLT.
