Hashi for Lunch

October 24, 2014

I lucked out today. There was actually a food truck parked in the general area of my office building and not just any truck but Hashi!

The office park I work in a surrounded by a lot of places to eat and I admit to loving a quick trip to the fast food joint but when Shelby told me Hashi was going to be down the street I got excited. It was rainy but all the better with what was on the menu. We ended up with a smoky stew and some Korean noodle stir-fry. We got a good portion and it was very filling. Both were delicious but I think I could eat the the japchae all day long. Shelby loved the pickled onions which added some pop to each bite.

They were serving a house made apple soda too, which I almost passed. I'm glad I didn't, it was tart and sweet and made your tongue tingle. The apple pulp gave the drink a great texture and all together it was a delicious drink--I wish I bought two.

Don't pass Hashi up if you see them parked around town, definitely worth a stop.

Noodles & Company - Virginia Beach

February 25, 2014

Ran over to the new Noodles & Company that opened this week in Virginia Beach, VA.

Thai Hot Pot

Thai Hot Pot

Shelby and I have never eaten there before but we've heard of people who have enjoyed it. They had a grand opening where the first 50 people earned some kind of special treat, but I had meetings. No First Fifty for me.

After checking out the menu beforehand I decided to try the Indonesian Peanut Saute and Shelby got the Thai Hot Pot--that looked really good. One of the first things I noticed when we walked in is that local/regional craft beer and cider was being served in the restaurant. I thought that was pretty cool. Wine is served there too, Shelby almost ordered one just for the novelty of doing so in a fast food joint.

We ate in, once you order you get a number and seat yourself. It was pretty busy but we quickly found an empty table. Checking out the menu on the wall you'll see they serve noodles in all styles. You could get Mac and Cheese, Spaghetti and Sauce, Stir-fry--all kinds of ways. Our food was brought to our table. The portions were good and it was tasty. It's near my office, I'll probably come by here for lunch sometime.

Check it out sometime.

p.s. - Oh, Shelby got 3 chopsticks in her package. What's that mean?

Take-out Dinner Tonight - Pho

November 5, 2013

We've been on a Pho (phở) kick this year, usually going to a place not too far from the house called Pho 79. With the cooler weather it's especially easy to pick-up something like this for dinner.

Shelby and I will split an order, so I pick up #4 Phở Tái, Nam, Gâu. Honestly, I have no idea if that is spelled correctly or what it translates into but I gave it go (copied and pasted from their site.) It's the broth with round steak, flank, and brisket. The beef is cooked when you get it. Some pho places we've been to serve the meat raw and the hot broth cooks it in the bowl. If I order in restaurant, I'll get the tendon and tripe in addition to the beef cuts.

I'll ask for extra sauces and vegetables, which they'll give you at no extra charge, and another container of broth. The extra broth is only $3. Sometimes I'll pick extra mint or Thai basil from our garden if it's available and cut up a little extra onion.

Driving home with it in the car makes me hungry. The whole car is filled with the smell of savory broth, I can't wait to open it.

Pho Night Bonus: Pretty sky tonight on the drive home.

Fancy Ramen Time at Home - Bulalo

September 26, 2013

I’ve been eating ramen from as far back as I can remember and it’s been the standard flavors you pick up in the grocery. While at the Asian market I noticed racks of new, different flavors so I picked up a bunch. The first one I had was Bulalo Bone Marrow Soup.

According to Wikipedia “Bulalo is a beef dish from the Philippines. It is a light colored soup that is made by cooking beef shanks and marrow bones until the collagen and fat has melted into the clear broth. Bulalo is native to the Southern Luzon region of the Philippines.”

Not bad, kinda like beef ramen for the most part. The package had a little packet of beef bits that hydrated in the broth. I’ll post more of these as they come.
